Spa Filters
Your spa filter has a very tough job! But it is easily taken for granted until it can no longer do its job. All of the water in the spa goes through the filter many times every time the spa pump is working. That poor filter is expected to filter out all kinds of debris and crud like bacteria, algae, natural oils, hair products, detergents and soaps, and anything else that shouldn't be in the water.
You can help your spa filter do its job more efficiently by taking good care of it and replacing it when you should. Establishing a routine of checking the filter on a regular basis will help keep the filter doing its job and let you know in plenty of time when to replace it so your spa remains in top condition.
One very much overlooked part of maintaining the filter is asking that people who are going to use the spa remove lotions, deodorants, make up and any hair products as these can build up in the water and clog the filter. Also be sure that swimsuits have been rinsed thoroughly to rid them of residual detergents. It is a good idea to shower before using the spa to help remove anything that could adversely affect the filter.
Another thing you can do to make your filter last longer is to use floaters design to absorb natural oils, lotions, soaps, etc. These are often referred to as 'Scumballs' or 'Scumbags'. Some look like rubber duckies, so they can even add a bit of fun to your spa. Cleaning these good on a regular basis will keep them working well.
It is best to run your pump on low for at least 3 hours a day even when you are not using the spa. This keeps the water filtered so you filter isn't trying to cleaning out a lot of stuff all at once when you so use you spa.
Check your filter regularly to see if it needs cleaned or changed. Change your filter at least every 12 months or sooner if it looks brownish or grayish. Also change it if it is loose. When putting in a filter, make sure it is seated well or it won't filter the water properly. A good idea is to have 2 filters so you always have one installed while the other is being cleaned.
For cleaning the filter, rinse it with a high-pressure hose at least once a week. When it no longer looks clean after this, it is time to change it. If the paper-like part of the filter appears flat, cracked, split or lost its sheen, it can't filter properly anymore so it is time to change it.
It is also necessary to keep the chemical balance of the water at optimum levels. By maintaining the sanitizing chemical levels in the right range, you don't over load your filter. Take care of your filter and it will help provide you with a safe and healthy spa to enjoy.
